Solera invented the community-based purchase model. For example, the Downtown West Solar Energy Project is a group of volunteers who have, over the last year, organized
a bulk purchase of solar energy systems for downtown homes.
The electricity generated by solar electric systems will be sold to
the Province for 42 cents per kilowatt-hour under the new Standard
Offer Contract program (you are now paying about 11 cents per-kilowatt
hour for power coming in from the grid). That means 31 cents profit,
per kilowatt hour is credited to you directly! The hot water from solar
water heating systems will be used in each household.
The DWSEP has completed our series of public meetings and is
presently signing up homeowners who want solar energy on their
rooftops. Homeowners have signed up for over 70 solar systems so far
(photovoltaic, hot water, or both), and we anticipate even more. The
more participants into this program, the more the cost per participant
comes down. So spread the good word. If you act now it is not too late
to take part. A Solera Energy consultant will come to your home to
explain how it works and give you a full consultation on how much or
how little it will cost, what the savings will be and how much energy
your new solar system will generate.
